COGNATES AND FALSES COGNATES

COGNATESAre two terms, usually different languages, which possess certain phonetic similarity (as they sounds) and lexical (as written). The cognates kinship traits can be a language to another, or form the influence of language on other.
True cognatesThey are words that are spelled similarly or sound in de two languages, and mean the same.

False cognatesThese words are written and sound similar in two different languages, but that does not mean the same.

Cuestión (matter of)

Personal description

  • The cognates are words that sound the same and are written about the same, but may or may not mean the same.
  • The true cognates are words that are spelled the same in Spanish and English, sound alike and mean the same.
  • The false cognates are words in Spanish and English that are written and sound almost the same but not the same.
